Imperative: Write your name here.

Present: I write in my journal every day.

Past: She wrote a letter yesterday.”


If the word usually starts without a prefix and often ends with a fatḥa (-a), it’s in the past form.

Example: كَتَبَ (kataba) → “he wrote.”


If the word starts with one of four prefixes — ي (ya), ت (ta), أ (ʾa), or ن (na) — it’s in the present form.

Example: يَكْتُبُ (yaktubu) → “he writes.”


If the word gives a command and usually has no prefix or starts with a hamza (ا), it’s an imperative.

Example: اُكْتُبْ (uktub) → “write!”
